How to stop water hammer

Having a water hammer in the home is a common problem with home owner.  This can sometimes be caused by wear and tear from the Toilet Valve Washer going, pipe coming loose or maybe the pressure has gone higher in the area.

Some people seem to think a water Hammer can be solved by turning down there Stop Valve, turning the mains valve does not stop the back pressure that is coming into the house which is the main reason the water pipes vibrate.

To know more about back pressure you have to have a good amount of knowledge when it comes to water hammer, most people don’t have this type of knowledge which is the reason I am going to give you an insight of how to solve water hammer in your home.

The point of where water hammer happens, is a quick reduce in water flow for example:

  • Isolation Valve
  • Gate Valve
  • Float Operating Valve (also know as the Ball Cock in the Tank)

There is also your pipes which may not be clipped and a sudden elbow in the piping system will cause the Plumbing to shudder.

Now the biggest question is “How do I solve a water hammer in my home

There are a few things that can be done starting from the cheapest method.

  • Replace a washer where vibrating takes place
  • Clip your pipes down securely
  • Fit a pressure reducing valve after the mains stop valve (recommended)
  • Fit a water hammer vessel in the attic if there is vibration coming from the tank or near by
