About Old Taps vs New Taps which includes how to fix a leaking tap

Tap Diagram
To some fixing a tap seems Impossible but to others can be very easy as long as you have correct Plumbing tools.
First of all what you need to do is undo the main valve nut that screws down on to the tap.
Some people find it hard doing this or may turn the complete tap but if you want to take special care by undoing a tap that is stuck the easy way then you would have to buy a Special Tap Tool.
Undo the mains valve, from here you will see a black washer which all you need to do is replace this with the same type of washer.
If you dont know what type of washer to replace it with then take it to your local Plumbers Merchant, they will give you the correct washer.

Leaking Mixer Tap
Remember the Spooky Shower I had written about, well this was the same address I did the Emergency Plumbing Job for where there was water pouring out from the tap but there was no where for the mains stop valve to be seen. This type of tap are the most awkward Taps to fix, If you don’t know the manufacture that makes these type of taps then the only thing you can do is to buy a new tap but for a temporary thing to do is to blank the pipes of from underneath.
People always ask me about Old taps vs New taps and this is the answer I come up with, Old taps are easier to deal with but new taps look nice but can be very expensive to fix due to ordering the specials valve directly from the manufacturers. Personally I would either buy a new tap with old style fixings or a nice style tap with spare fixing and Instructions.

Bib Tap
Here’s another Emergency Plumbing Job I did where I had to fix some old taps, These old taps are known as the Bib Tap which have been around for years. The good news for these that they are very easy to maintain.
Once upon a Plumbing time taps use to look messy and very untidy like the taps shown in this Picture.
